 After the player has spoken to the item multiple times and received the same silent response each time, the player will eventually be able to unlock this set of dialogue.  This will occur after numerous attempts have been made to communicate with the item, each of which results in the same response.  If you continue acting in this manner, she will eventually become curious about the Baneful Shadow.

After the players have had a conversation with Ranni and received instructions on how to defeat the shadow, they are free to proceed to the area where the Baleful Shadow is located there is no longer any restriction on their movement.  Players only need to enter Nokstella, the Eternal City, head west from the Site of Grace, and make their way through the watery path that is guarded by a large number of electrified Silver Tears in order to arrive at their desired location.  Finding one's way there is not a particularly difficult task to undertake.  After making their way through the crowd, the players will notice a tower-like structure quite a distance to the left of where they are currently standing after they have made their way through the crowd.  When players enter this building, they will be taken on a lengthy elevator ride that will lead them to a different Site of Grace as well as a cave that is located nearby.  Both of these locations are accessible through the same entrance.  Both of these locations can be visited at the same time without any problems.  The players will arrive at a location that has a reddish hue if they successfully navigate the cave while keeping an eye out for the three Basalik enemies.

 When they are in that location, they are going to have a run-in with the Shadow of Malevolence.
