Flattened Wire Rope on the Drum: How to Handle It

The lower layer of wire rope on the drum being flattened by the upper layer is mainly due to the wire rope not being tightly wound on the drum. This phenomenon is particularly prone to occur with luffing wire ropes. When the crane operates continuously for a long time under a certain working condition, the working frequency is high, and the lifting operation has vibration, the luffing wire rope wound on the drum will gradually become loose under the vibration. The loosened lower layer of wire rope will be flattened under the pressure of the upper layer of wire rope.

Solution

The compressive resistance of a wire rope without tension is greatly reduced compared to that of a tightened wire rope. If no-load travel is more frequent, it can also cause the luffing rope to loosen. In order to avoid the luffing wire rope being flattened by the upper layer of wire rope, the lowering arm and lifting arm operations should be carried out when there is no lifting and lowering arm for a long time, which can tighten the luffing wire rope.
